I've been bouncing around ideas of home CNC machines since I wrote this post last April- I think at this point I'm looking more for a CNC bridgeport than a shop bot, for square footage concerns alone. I haven't considered building stepper drivers- for small steppers, I would consider it, but for bigger ones I think $150 for the geckodrives is a good deal, considering the tendency of homegrown motor controls to, well, not always work and blow up a lot. Gauchos!

Hi,
Nice projects, I like your ambition to make a CNC (I also got it). Have you considered making your own stepper motor controllers? this is what Im planing on doing, All you need is a power supply, some power mosfets, and a microcontroller. There is this guy who already did this on a PIC and I though I could recycle his code for my own project. Then for software I was thinking of EMC2 on Ubunutu with the parrallel port. Im in El Cerrito (high school) so maybe Ill bump into someday, who knows !!
Good Luck,
